Introducing Faezal Tan
Faezal, a lecturer for Illustration and Multimedia courses in a local university, was selected by Asia-Europe Foundation in 2008 to attend the LINGUA COMICA 3 Residency Program in Kyoto. Wires*, His collaborative comics work with with Nele Bronner (Germany) and PieR Gajewski (France) won the Lingua Comica Reloaded competition in 2010. His comics, "The Time Project" won a grant from Multimedia Development Corporation of Malaysia's (MDeC) Intellectual Property Creative Challenge in 2007 and he is currently working on "The Time Project" vol 2.

Gila Monster Vs Martian

Early this year, Sau Lim was invited to work on a comic project for animation-- WAR OF THE WORLDS: GOLIATH (WOTW) which will be completed in the winter of 2011 and begin a theatrical release worldwide shortly after that.
The short story that Sau Lim did was THE CAPTAIN, it's part of an anthology based on the world of WOTW. The other talents who worked on the project are fellow Malaysian artists- Puppeteer, Popia, Redcode, Puyuh, Nanzo, Eisu and etc.

The comic anthology will be release under the HEAVY METAL banner, in their Summer 2011 special! Check out the sample pages here!

Major Zombie: Love & Loss reviewed in The Star

Major Zombie: Love & Loss graphic novel is reviewed in Malaysia's The Star newspaper on the 4th of March, 2011. The review is by Kaleon Rahan in the weekly Worlds of Wonder column.

Here are a snippet of the review: From Marvel Zombies to The Walking Dead, is there still room for another zombie-franchise? While both Marvel and Image releases are premised in a post-apocalyptic world where zombies are the dominant kind, Major Zombie exists on this equal landscape where he is also humanity’s main protector. The living dead protecting the living concept may take some getting used to, but give it a shot.

In case you feel that this is an effort riding on the curtails of successful zombie-related releases, it isn’t as there is chronological evidence to indicate that Major Zombie is very much original. Lefty’s labour-of-the-living-dead was created in 2003 (same time as the then unknown Walking Dead and two years before Marvel Zombies).

SIX: The Rebirth reviewed on CBR

After Major Zombie: Love & Loss graphic novel is reviewed in CBR (Comic Book Resources) Comics Should Be Good column. On the February 24 in the installment, Sau Lim and Tan Eng Huat's SIX: The Rebirth is being reviewed as well.
SIX is available at G&B Comics (Block 1 Rochor Center, Singapore, tel: 6837 2280), Prologue @Ion and all Kinokuniya outlets in Singapore and Malaysia.

Here is part of the review by Brian Cronin:

In any event, once you get into the stories themselves, they’re engaging romps. Chin Sau Lim creates some interesting personalities for the police (and whoever designed their outfits – good stuff, very cool looking squad uniforms, as you can see on the cover). Also, as noted, Tan Eng Huat is an excellent artist, so he draws a very compelling action drama. Over-the-top action but grounded in human emotion. A Mecha goes nuts after the woman that the Mecha is based on also goes nuts (something about babies), so it begins to attack a hospital. The police show up and have to distract her while the other cops try to hunt down which person this particular Mecha was based on. It was a fast-paced race to the “finish,” and it was quite tense and exciting.

The second story, written and drawn by Chin Sau Lim, was a little more laid back. Chin Sau Lim is a fine artist, as well, and his moodier artwork worked well for a tale of revenge, just taken perhaps in the “after-life.”

Every day this month I’ll be reviewing a different independent comic book, based on submissions from the creators of the comic books themselves.

The month continues with Major Zombie: Love and Loss, by Lefty and Tan Eng Huat, a real treat of a comic…

Gilamon Comics is a Malaysian independent comic book company founded by a trio of comic book artists: Lefty, Michael Chuah, and Chi Sau Lim. Recently, Tan Eng Huat (who has done a number of projects for Marvel and DC, including the very recent Thor: First Thunder series) has begun to work with them, as well. Tan Eng Huat draws the first of two stories in this magazine-sized, full-color magazine, while Lefty writes both stories and draws the second.

The gist of Major Zombie is as follows – a Superman analogue, Supreme-Man, gets turned into a zombie saving a young female adventurer. He has lost much of his original power, but he is still pretty darn powerful, and continues as a superhero known as Major Zombie, along with the female adventurer, Kaktus, as his sidekick (as obviously she feels indebted to him).

To celebrate the 1st anniversary of Malaysia Mandarin Comics Society (MMCS), the society is organizing a series of comics industry related talks on the 17th of July, 2010 at The One Academy(TOA). Many of the industry professionals will be there to share their experience. Lefty and Sau Lim will be sharing the stage with Gun Yoong Peng (Editor, Gemilang Publishing) to talk about "Submission Guidelines and Censorship"(2-2:50pm) whilst Michael Chuah will be teaming up with Aliow, Totoro (both co-creator of Oka) and Jon Dep (Magic Boy) on "Acquired Skills of A Professional Comics Artist"(2-4pm).

Awhile back, Sau Lim was persuaded by his old pal Mr.Chong, to draw a huge chalk mural in front of Mr.Chong's newly launch beer & wine gallery, called d'TREE at Puchong(ioi Boulevard). Sau Lim worked his ass off from 8pm evening until 2am midnight. "Tough, but gratifying" he said.

2009 10th Taiwan International Comic Artist Conference @ Tamsui, Day 3

Internatianal Coimc Artist Conference (which was held in Tamsui, Taiwan from 23-25 Oct, 2009) has always been a pilgrimage event for artists around the Asia region. This year, Michael and Sau Lim managed to participate in it.

The 3-day event was jam-packed with discussion panels, reports of educational comics market in the region by various comics professionals from their respective country. There was also an exhibition to showcase artist's work from participated countries.

Works of Sau Lim, Michael and Lefty(who was absent) were exhibited during this prolific event.

This year we are lucky to make our present at Comic-Con San Diego, the mother of all comics conventions, as part of the Liquid City team with Sonny Liew. Perspective, a prestigous Hong Kong-based art and architecture magazine, has shortlisted Lefty as one of the winners of its annual "40 Under 40 Awards", which is featured in its July '09 issue.

Other winners that Lefty shares this honour with include:

Kelichiro Sako, his company, Sako Architects, has been taking part in various projects in Beijing since 2004.

Sloerd Hoekstra, who set up Three Dogs in Hong Kong as a specialist outlet for visual merchandising and store planning. Crocs, Vans, and SmartTone-Vodafone are just a few of its many clients.

Vincent Pang, who holds a master's degree from Columbia University in New York and is alsothe founder of VPang Architects and VAP Design, Hong Kong.

It is a very privileged moment for Gilamon Studio - not only because Lefty is selected among such calibre of talents - but also because comic book art has been recognized as part of the main force of the art and design industry.

Liquid City Anthology Launch @ Malaysia

The KL launch of Liquid City Anthology was held on the 14th Dec 2008 at Kinokuniya KLCC. Editor/ artist Sonny liew was here with another Singaporean artist, Otto Fong. Malaysian comic book artists who attended the launch were, Leong Wan Kok, Sau Lim, Kaoru, Keith, Tan Eng Huat, Azhar & Chee.

A lot of readers turned up for the autograph session which started around 3pm. After the show, we have a small gathering at the cafe on the mezzanine level of Kinokuniya. We were pleasantly surprised by the presents of Datuk Mohammad Nor Khalid @Lat who came all the way from Ipoh to support thye event. He shared many of his precious experiences in the industry & also his latest project with Pos Malaysia - Lat's stamps collection. Again, thanks to Sonny Liew & Kit (Kino Manager) for their effort to make this session such a success. Hope the anthology book 2 will release soon~~ (and Gilamon will be invited to contribute again :P)

At Liquid City Launch in Singapore

Michael, Sau Lim, Lefty and Wan Kok (with his wife, 3-D artist Khor) are Malaysian creators who traveled to Singapore for this event.

People already started to gather just a bit before 2 pm. By 4 pm, which the autograph session ended, all the copies of Liquid City anthology (Retailing at about 40+ SGD) are completely sold out. According to Sonny Liew, this means it will remain on Kinokuniya's top sellers chart for another week.

We all did 3 huge pieces of jam art which will be given away to 3 readers who purchase a copy of Liquid City during the launch. Winners will be determined by lucky draw.

Gilamon would like to thank Sonny Liew for making such organizing this wonderful event and tirelessly keeping it afloat during the 2 hour session. Most of us are not good with the mike and he has to do most of the talking. Lefty did a brief intro on Gempak Starz, Popcorn (which is available in Singapore now) and the Malaysian comic book market. Hopefully no one fell asleep during that few minutes.

Gilamon not only managed to attend the launch of Half Flat, we also got to visit Spencer and see his impressive collection of comic book and movie character bust and statue thanks to Bernard Ang of G & B Comics and Winston Goh. More picture on Spencer's collection in our later posting.

Liquid City Malaysia Launch will be at Kinokuniya KLCC on the 14th of December Sunday at 2 pm onwards. So far Sonny and Otto are confirmed coming. We are sure there will be more Singapore based creators will take part in this event in KLCC.

At The Half Flat Art Show

It was a very busy day for Sonny as he has to rush of after the launch to get himself ready for the evening's Half Flat Art Show in another part of the city. Half Flat Show is and art exhibition that brings together the personal and commercial arts of four award-winning illustrators based in Singapore. Liquid Citizens Sonny Liew and Koh Hong Teng are among them. The other two are Skan Srisuwan of IFS and Tan Lun Cheak.

Gilamon will be down in the Lion City on the 29-30 Nov weekend to attend the launch of the Liquid City Comics Anthology at Kinokuniya Singapore Main Store (Takashimaya). POPCORN, Gempak Starz's first English anthology that features creator-owned materials is coming out this month. It will be launch during 100% Gempak Starz Exhibition. The venue will be at Dasein Academy of Art on 11/10/2008 from 9am-6pm. Tan Eng Huat, the featured artist of Popcorn's inaugural issue will have a talk about his working experience in the international comic scene. Gilamon Michael will also share his experience as a freelance
artist/ designer. There will be lots of original artworks from Popcorn displayed along with some other goodies up for grab. The exhibition will be from 11-24/10/2008 at Dasein. See you there.

Liquid City @ Previews

Liquid City, the comic anthology that is edited by Sonny Liew will be coming out in November by Image Comics. We are featured in it along with some of the very talented creators mainly from the region of South-east Asia, such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

Major Zombie is on the cover of the latest Don't Panic pack. It couldn't come in a better time as it is also the launch of Major Zombie Black T-shirt series in STCC by the end of this month. Details and design of the T-shirts are featured at the back of the pack.

Don't Panic packs can be found every month at selected clubs, cafes, colleges, art spaces, music events and launch parties.

We are teaming up with SoraWorks and Zemotion to set up booths at the inaugural Singapore Toy & Comic Convention (STCC). STCC will be held @Suntec City Convention Hall 603, from 27-29 June 2008. Look for Pulp*Friction, Gilamon and SoraWorks' booth at F03 of the Artist Alley (next to Singapore Tourism Board) while Zemotion is just a few steps away at F09.

Lefty was interviewed by a Bahasa Malaysia daily Kosmo during the PeKOMIK MiniKon. It appeared in the 8th May Issue. His segment of the interview was about Malaysian comic scene in the 90's.

For those who missed it and also for those who could not read Bahasa Malaysia, here are the key points:

The major players in Malaysian comic scene during the 90's:
• Image Comics and the presents of mainstream(X-Men. Batman), and indie(Cerebus, Nexus) American comics and the booming of comics speciality shops(Mind Shop, Comics Corner, Final Frontier, Comixtra, Headmaster etc)
• The beginning of comic adaptations to Hollywood blockbusters (e.g Tim Burton's Batman)
• Comic book colouring being upgraded to digital colouring mainly from the Image titles, it changed the way comics are being coloured
• Manga invasion
• The present of internet
• The awareness of creator rights

If you have anything to add, feel free to drop a line. We are sure there will be a lot more.

On a side topic, Lefty were asked about the differences among comics by the three major races in Malaysia, which are the Malay, Chinese and Indians. To his opinion, Malay comics has more exaggerated expressions and the humour are more slapsticks while the Chinese likes cute and pretty elements (much influenced by the Japanese). Lefty could not comment on Indian comics because he hardly see any in the local market.

Pekomik Mini Convention 2008 Part 3

Gilamon had a forum today, sort of an introduction to the Pekomik members. For those who missed it, here a what we've shared in point form:
• Who we are (see the top panel of this blog hahahaha)
• We formed Gilamon despite already working in Art Square Creation(Except for Michael, who left Art Square about a year ago but he still submits comics here), an established publisher with a string of successful comics and magazines because the works of Gilamon is very personal, experimental and most of the time not very commercial.
• Gilamon may be a very indie/underground kind of set up but we have no problem working for the mainstreams as professional comic book creators and illustrators. Like Warren Ellis who have a string of super hero comics published by Marvel("Iron Man", "Next Wave", "Astonishing X-Men") while continue to release personal works such as "Strange Killings", "Fell" & "Anna Mercury".
• We want to apply comics art in other medium. We contribute to design magazines, collaborate with designers, take part in design conferences, put up booth at rock concerts, sponsor clubbing activities. We also have a series of street wear.

Pekomik Mini Convention 2008 Part 1

Pekomik, Malaysia's very own comics society, will be launching its inaugural comics convention on the 5th of April, 2008. The mini con will be held during KL International Book Fair from 5th-13th April at Putra World TradeCentre(PWTC).
Gilamon will take part in the attempt to draw the longest comics banner in the history of Bolehland, and also to have our own session on the 12th of April sometime between 2pm-8pm (Will update a more specific time here as we confirmed from Pekomik).

For those who want to meet us and a string of very talented local comic book artists and creators, please come over. Gilamon will be there at the launch this Saturday morning, to chair a session on the 12th of Apr and also the final day (13th) comic book artists gathering. We will also be selling our latest mini comic, entitled "Black Xmas" for only RM4.90 during the con.
